‘we disappear in sounds and places’

KAREN WILLEMS is a drummer, percussionist and composer from Belgium. She is active in different areas. Started as a drummer in rock and pop bands such as Zita Swoon Group, Jan Swerts, Pascal Deweze, Novastar. With a number of musicians she built up a tradition within improvised music and sound art: Eric Thielemans, Jean DL, Benjamin Glorieux, Aidan Baker, Stijn Dickel, Rodrigo Fuentealba, Kaboom Karavan… She is also active in theater, dance and contemporary music productions: Kopergietery, Ultima Vez, ChampdAction, Platform K…

With 'Terre Sol' Willems is on a mission and she will focus on her own work.

It brought her (just before lockdown) to Istanbul.
The limited collaborations she had with Turkish musicians, the love for music, folklore and tradition made her curious. For 10 days she infiltrated in the city and life of Istanbul.

Most of the time she worked in duo with artist and friend Barkın Engin. Just plug and play, one shot recordings and no overdubs. Afterwards Willems made a collage of the recordings and mixed them with fieldrecordings of Istanbul.

BARKIN ENGIN is one of the founders of the band Replikas. He is involved in several music projects (Reverie Falls On All, Pitohui, Yerçekimi...). He is a sound engineer/designer for music and film productions and he is a teacher at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.

SESLERDE is the second tape release on Willems path.
The result of an inspiring trip.
Long walks, concerts, a mix of colors and sounds, from avant-garde to tradition.
